  • The administration threatens or opens an investigation, files charges, or takes away someone’s job, license, or security clearance. The target simply did their job, exercised their First Amendment rights, and/or stood up to Trump and his abuses of power.

  • Our team at DEFIANCE.org reaches out to people facing adverse government action over their lawful speech, journalism, or performance of official duties. We work with our partners to help them secure support for legal, security, and/or other needs to defend their rights.

  • The target fights back instead of folding. Trump is hoping people will capitulate. But we want to crowd-source the courage (and the means) to help them stand up for ALL of our rights.

Georgia Fort is an independent Minnesota journalist who was indicted along with former CNN anchor Don Lemon, two other journalists, and 34 activists for livestreaming a January protest against Trump's immigration crackdown inside a St. Paul church. Rather than being allowed to turn herself in, she was arrested by federal agents at home in front of her children.

She pleaded not guilty in February 2026, and recently her attorneys asked a judge to dismiss the charges, arguing the case violates the First Amendment and amounts to vindictive prosecution.

Lisa Cook is the first Black woman to serve as a Federal Reserve governor. Trump moved to fire her in August 2025 over mortgage fraud allegations made by his housing regulator, who then filed criminal referrals against her with the Justice Department.

In June 2026 the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that she can stay in her job while her challenge moves forward, but the White House has since notified her that Trump is again "considering" removing her as part of an apparent effort to take over the Federal Reserve.

Letitia James is the New York attorney general who won the civil fraud judgment against Trump and his company. After he repeatedly called for her prosecution, his handpicked U.S. attorney charged her with bank fraud and false statements over a Virginia property she bought in 2020.

A judge dismissed those charges in November 2025, and in December two separate grand juries refused to indict her, but the administration has kept coming, referring her to prosecutors in Miami and Chicago in March 2026 over alleged homeowner's insurance fraud that she denies.

Why are we doing this?

In 2018, I wrote an anonymous op-ed warning the country about the president I worked for. Then I went public to expose his corruption and abuses of power.

When he returned to office, he ordered federal agencies to investigate me for “treason,” revoked my security clearance, and put my family in danger. It was the first time in U.S. history, I was told, that a president had signed an order to have a critic investigated for First Amendment protected speech.

The result? I lost my small business. I lost close friends, who were scared to associate with me. My wife and daughter received death threats. And we wondered if we’d have to sell our home to stay afloat.

What got me through was courageous people across the country — most of whom I’d never met — who stepped forward to offer help. To get me connected to a world-class legal team. To encourage me to keep fighting. It changed my life.

So I fought instead of folding, launched DEFIANCE,org to help others do the same, and now we’re creating the Anti-Weaponization Fund so the next targets of presidential revenge are not alone in their fight. Thank you for standing with them.
