Our team at DEFIANCE.org reaches out to people facing adverse government action over their lawful speech, journalism, or performance of official duties. We work with our partners to help them secure support for legal, security, and/or other needs to defend their rights.

The target fights back instead of folding. Trump is hoping people will capitulate. But we want to crowd-source the courage (and the means) to help them stand up for ALL of our rights.

Mark Kelly is a U.S. senator and retired Navy captain who made a video reminding service members they can refuse illegal orders, after which Trump called it sedition punishable by death and Hegseth censured him and moved to cut his retirement rank. A judge blocked the Pentagon in February 2026, a grand jury refused to indict the lawmakers, and the administration's appeal is still pending.
Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a Maryland sheet metal worker and father of three who was illegally deported to a Salvadoran prison, then charged with human smuggling once he won his fight to come home. A judge threw out the charges in May 2026 as vindictive, but the DOJ is trying to revive them and still wants him deported.
E. Jean Carroll is the writer who sued Trump for sexually assaulting and then defaming her, winning $5 million from one jury and $83.3 million from another. He has paid the smaller verdict, but he and the Justice Department are now asking the Supreme Court to erase the larger one.

Why are we doing this?
In 2018, I wrote an anonymous op-ed warning the country about the president I worked for. Then I went public to expose his corruption and abuses of power.
When he returned to office, he ordered federal agencies to investigate me for “treason,” revoked my security clearance, and put my family in danger. It was the first time in U.S. history, I was told, that a president had signed an order to have a critic investigated for First Amendment protected speech.
The result? I lost my small business. I lost close friends, who were scared to associate with me. My wife and daughter received death threats. And we wondered if we’d have to sell our home to stay afloat.
What got me through was courageous people across the country — most of whom I’d never met — who stepped forward to offer help. To get me connected to a world-class legal team. To encourage me to keep fighting. It changed my life.
So I fought instead of folding, launched DEFIANCE,org to help others do the same, and now we’re creating the Anti-Weaponization Fund so the next targets of presidential revenge are not alone in their fight. Thank you for standing with them.
